One Day Moving Permits (REG172)
 
One Day Moving Permits allow you to operate or transport a vehicle with current registration fees paid (proof of payment required) or a planned non-operation (PNO) on file for specific purposes such as relocating a vehicle, smog checks, DMV inspections, or repairs. The permit is valid for one selected calendar day only. You must handwrite the chosen date on the permit before use, which must be within 60 days of issuance.
 
Digital and Physical Permit Options
 
You may request a digital copy of the One Day Moving Permit, delivered via email. This version can be printed at home and includes a unique QR code for authenticity verification. While some private companies — such as vehicle auctions or storage yards — may honor the digital version, law enforcement agencies, impound lots, and DMV field offices may not accept it. 
 
⚠️ The California DMV does not issue or endorse digital permits. Use of the digital version is at your own discretion and may not be legally recognized for all situations.
 
For official use with law enforcement or for vehicle releases from impounds or tow yards, we highly recommend ordering the physical version, which will be shipped to your address and complies with standard California DMV documentation protocols.
 
Usage Guidelines and Legal Notice
 
Each permit is valid from 12:00 AM to 11:59 PM on the one selected day of use.
Vehicle must be insured, operable, and not under a registration or legal hold.
The permit may only be used for DMV-authorized purposes such as smog checks, inspections, or transport to a registration appointment.
Customers may order multiple permits per vehicle, but each permit must be used on a separate date and must have the intended use date written in ink before operation.
